The Design-Build Institute of America, Mid-America Region (DBIA-MAR), announced October 20 that the Northeast Orchard Street Improvements project in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, has been given a merit award in the category of civil infrastructure. The 2016 Best in Craft projects were recognized, and design-build best practices were showcased in an awards ceremony.

The City of Lee’s Summit made a choice to use the design-build delivery method for the Orchard Street project. The city selected Emery Sapp & Sons Inc. as the contractor and Olsson Associates as the designer. The $3.2 million improvement project included street reconstruction, installation of concrete curb and gutter and sidewalks, stormwater improvements, and utility relocations. The project also included public involvement, engineering analysis, preliminary and final design, and construction of the improvements along the corridor.

The awards selection panel consisted of seven judges who are experienced in the design-build method of project delivery. The judges represent a diverse cross-section of owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and subconsultants.

In the last several years, Olsson’s Kansas City Transportation team has completed seven design-build roadway projects. This is the team’s second DBIA-MAR award-winning project.
