Norfolk's 25th Street project involved reconstructing approximately 6,400 feet of 25th Street from Highway 275 to Benjamin Avenue. The project also provided preliminary and final design of a prestressed-concrete, inverted tee bridge to carry 25th Street over the inlet to Sky View Lake. The project widened the existing roadway to a 39-foot curbed section and added a center-shared, left-turn lane for most of the project. It also created a narrower, 28-foot section with curbs adjacent to Skyview Park to reduce impacts to the park.
Olsson provided design and construction phase services on the 25th Street project. The project included reconstructing pavement, adding storm sewer systems, improving safety and capacity, and refining horizontal and vertical alignment. The project also included adding new sidewalks; extending multi-use trails in and near Skyview Park. Further improvements included reconstructing signals, roadway lighting, landscaping, and water mains; replacing guardrails; and constructing retaining walls.
The existing 25th Street bridge was removed and replaced with a single-span bridge that incorporated aesthetic enhancements to the abutments and railings. The bridge design accommodated a sidewalk on the bridge and perpetuated a bike trail undercrossing below the bridge.
The project was conducted in phases and utilized detours for pedestrians and vehicles. The project's construction was complete in July 2013.
