Joplin’s historic Joe Becker Stadium has hosted such celebrity players as Mickey Mantle, Gabby Street, Stan Musial, Joe Garagiola, Whitey Herzog, Ken Boyer, and Ralph Terry. Desiring to bring baseball back to this once very active venue, the City of Joplin has taken a big swing to revitalize this historic stadium.
In early fall of 2014, Olsson Associates was selected by the City of Joplin as the civil engineer to help the city and the project architect, Corner Greer, renovate Joe Becker Stadium. The remodeled stadium was designed to be the new home of the Joplin Blasters, whose inaugural season as a member of the American Association of Independent Baseball began on May 19, 2015. This $5 million design-build project, led by Crossland Construction, broke ground late fall of 2014 and was completed quickly to ensure play could begin for the Blasters the following May.
Renovations included a new entry plaza and concourses and new fixed seating for 3,200 fans. They also included relocating existing bleachers for outfield spectators, building eight luxury suites, and constructing six fully functioning concession stands.
Olsson’s design services included site utility relocations and improvements, grading and Americans with Disabilities Act site compliance, storm sewer collection and routing, sediment and erosion control, and site layout assistance. In addition to Olsson’s design services, Olsson provided construction inspection and observation, initial property surveying, and construction staking.
